New Road Angel - Our Review

Blackspot have listened to lots of user comments about the original Road Angel, and updated it to produce the long-awaited New Road Angel. Despite the similarity of the name there are quite a number of differences, and the updated model is now far prettier on the dash than the now re-branded ‘Classic' Road Angel.

The most noticeable difference is the styling of the unit. There is now a large LCD display, which has an unmistakeable bright blue backlight. This turns red at an alert, resulting in the clearest alerts that could not be missed. Behind, the unit itself is a novel, round shape, and the buttons are very user-friendly, as they are soft-touch and plenty big enough. They have also added Tiff Needel's voice for spoken warnings, and boy, does he sound enthusiastic when he's alerting you to those safety cameras. In fact he even sounds excited when you power him up.

The device is now all integrated, so there's not only a built-in antenna, but also a built-in laser sensor, making it neat and easily transferable if you have more than one car. If you have one of those dreaded reflective windscreens it's not the end of the world, because the New Road Angel's optional remote antenna is a convenient plug-in type, making it reasonably priced.

As with the Classic, the New Road Angel is very simple and straightforward, making it very easy to use. The database is tried and tested, and will now include schools as well as speed cameras and accident hotspots, so there should be no need to worry about accuracy.

WHAT WE LIKE

  • Compact appealing design
  • Simple to use
  • Clear visual alerts

WHAT WE DON'T LIKE
  • Doesn't tell you the speed limit
