Novus Alpha In Operation

The Novus unit has an LCD display on the front of the unit, which provides additional information to the voice announcements. Whilst driving normally it will display the current speed. When a warning is triggered, a chime is heard followed by an announcement such as ‘Warning speed camera 500 yards ahead – limit 30 miles per hour', the speed limit at the camera site will flash for eight seconds, before going back to displaying the vehicle's speed. This will typically happen at 500 yards from the camera position, (in some cases a 500 yard warning is not ideal because of the road layout). A second chime is heard at 200 yards from the camera site, and if the vehicle is still over the speed limit, a continuous warning is heard ‘Warning – reduce speed' until the vehicle speed drops to the speed limit, or the camera site is passed.

Easy Installation

The Novus unit is easy to install. The user simply has to Insert the power jack into the cigar lighter, and plug the other end of the lead into the Novus unit, then place the Novus unit on top of the magnet. It is now ready to use.

The unit is very easy to update via the website using the USB lead and software CD supplied. The user clicks the update database button on the front page of the website, and follows a few simple instructions. The Novus back office facility then does the rest.

Novus have taken a revolutionary step with their database collection. Our approach is radically different to others. The police have defined and use designated sites for their mobile camera operations. These sites have been chosen because they are considered to be areas with a history of serious accidents. The mobile camera operator cannot simply choose a convenient stretch of road to operate equipment. We are therefore compiling, within our database, all the designated mobile sites. Rather than trying to ‘out detect' the cameras we passively warn drivers as they approach any of these sites, raising their awareness of the area ahead. This approach, regardless of the presence of a mobile camera operator or not, keeps the driver aware of their speed and more alert in general.

Novus can also work out its speed and direction of travel, its height above sea level, as well as the time and the date.
