Talex - Our Review

Talex is a new brand from a company bringing together backgrounds in GPS and retail. They say they recognised a common need in the marketplace for sensibly priced speed camera detectors based on the very latest technology. Will they deliver?

The Talex itself is small and tidy, one compact unit with an integral antenna, with an easy magnetic dash mount - no windscreen mounting is necessary.

On start-up a voice announces that the system is active, and you're off. The bright LED display shows your speed and can also show the time. When you approach a danger zone it shows the speed limit at a fixed camera as well as your distance to it, and the information is announced by voice as well.

The database has fixed and possible mobile speed camera sites programmed in, along with accident blackspots, red light cameras, and optional database information is given for schools, congestion charge, steep hills and sharp bends, depending on the setting you choose. You can choose to have all these warnings in the normal mode or there is also a “Cam” to just have the camera warnings if you prefer.

The alerts are both visual and audible, with a combination of a voice and chimes warning you and giving you the all-clear when you have passed the hazard.

If buying an unfamiliar brand puts you off, remember, for the functionality Talex offers this is a bargain priced unit. It's fair to say that the Talex database has not yet been tried and tested by thousands of users, but it looks promising, and they offer an assurance that their database is updated regularly (weekly) by a professional survey team of ex–traffic police officers. Even better, the database updates are among the cheapest too, so it won't break the bank!
