Having dominated the radar detector market for years, this was Snooper's first foray into the GPS market. Predominantly sold as a combined GPS and Radar system, this is a good all-rounder, and the only one with a built-in modem so you do not need a computer for updates. It's best mounted as a permanent fixture, which can be done as a DIY job or professionally.
It has lots of useful features to recommend: It's directional, so you can choose whether to have it alerting you whichever side of the road the camera's on or not, it knows which road number you're on, it knows the speed limit and you can set it to only alert you if you're exceeding the limit if you like. The GPS and the RLD radar/laser units communicate so that you can set it to Smart Mute which means it only goes off if you're travelling over 27mph. Great for use in town to stop the usual inevitable radar detector false alerts.
When first launched in December 2002 the S6R came up against some stick on the database side of things. However the manufacturers have worked hard to put things right in the 4 years since and their Enigma database is now award winning powering the likes of the Sapphire and the Evolution as well as Sat Nav systems the Indago and Syrius.
Unlike many of the products now on the market the S6 combined with the S100 Radar & Laser Detector (S6-R) uniquely offers protection using all 3 technologies available. The radar gives some false alert in town but we would only recommend having the radar detection switched on when on dual carriageways and motorways to detect the mini gatso cameras, often setup at motorway roadworks.
WHAT WE LIKE
- Easy updates via telephone line, not PC
WHAT WE DON'T LIKE
- Modem makes the screen bulky - well you cannot have your cake and eat it
